Delivering Positive Patient Identification and Meeting your Best-Practices Criteria

Positive Patient Identification: Clarification Barcoded and Non-barcoded

There is no such thing as a pre-printed Patient ID barcoded band or label. Many Hospital coordinators look at original band and tell us they are using a non-bar coded bands and labels. All barcoded unique Patient Identification is generated from the Hospital Information System (HIS) and printed onto labels (adhered to a band afterwards) or directly on bands.
Example: A blank band or label sheet that can be inserted into a laser or a direct thermal printer then data from the HIS delivers data to the appropriate label area and fused onto the media—a best practice.
Best Practice states that all patients be banded with unique barcoded patient identification. (Examples a, b & c)
